Overview

Crafting a fun and engaging experience for news discovery & conversations.‍

A news app that serves as a single central hub for users to discover information and chat with others about relevant topics.Allowing users personalize their content recommendations and participate in secure chat rooms to discuss and share opinions about current events and news topics.

Scope & Goal(s)

My Scope of work covered:‍

● Research & Discovery:

Desk Research was conducted to identify the target audience, relevant topics, and reputable sources of information. It also involved analyzing user behavior to determine the features and functionalities that users are looking for in a news app.

‍● Defining the solution and generating ideas:

Understand user's preferences on content consumption, chat room interactions, general app navigation and personalization to ensure it meets users' needs and preferences.

‍● Designing the solution:

The final design process involved creating a component library (which would evolve to a design system), intuitive & visually appealing UI, exploring integrating personalized content recommendations and finally, ensuring the implementation of secure chat rooms. The design tool of choice was Figma.

Setting the Stage

The need for a consistent design language

One of the primary goals of creating a component library and a styleguide for this project was to establish a consistent visual language that would not only provide a cohesive look and feel but also make it easier for designers and developers to create and maintain design elements at scale. By establishing guidelines for typography, color, spacing, and other key design elements, I was able to ensure that the app's design is coherent and aligned with the overall brand identity & visual feel, while also making it more efficient to create new design components. This approach also promotes better collaboration and communication between myself and the developers, as everyone is working from a common set of design principles and components.

Little delights

I wanted to create a fun way for users to pick interests (this is a part of onboarding) so I opted to use animations to represent user actions. Fun right?

Upon signing up, users get a guided tour of the home screen, to help ensure they get a quick hang of how to navigate around.

From the Home Screen of this app, users can access a range of features and actions, including viewing top news stories, browsing news by category, searching for specific news articles, accessing their personal profile and preferences, and joining or creating chat rooms to discuss news topics with other users. Additionally, the Home Screen provides quick access to the profile & settings, notifications, and other app-related functions.

Exploring the News

The Explore Page allows users to discover news articles by category, trending topics, and popular articles. It also provides personalized recommendations based on user preferences and browsing history.

Discovering Relevant News with Ease

The Search feature with the explore page allows users to find news articles, publishers and chatrooms quickly and easily.Additionally, the Search feature provides suggestions and auto-completion to help users refine their search queries and find the news they're looking for.

Discussing Topics and Building Connections with Like-Minded Readers

The Chat Rooms provide a platform for users to connect with others, discuss relevant news topics, and share opinions.

Users can create or join chat rooms based on specific topics, view active discussions, and interact with other users through messaging and reactions.

Stay in the know

Users can get information even while not in the application. Information such as: personalized content recommendations, new message notifications in chat rooms, trending stories in topics of interest. e.t.c.

Key Learnings

As I immersed myself in designing this app, I discovered that building a solid and reliable system with a style guide was key to ensuring that the experience was both consistent and scalable. I spent hours staring at my screen, trying to make everything look nice and work well, while also worrying about pleasing everyone from toddlers to grandmas. I had to juggle between making the app stand out and fit in, depending on who was using it. It was a delicate balancing act, but one that eventually made me a better designer.
